Share or embed a video testimonial
Put one video testimonial on any web page with its own player. Copy its link or embed code, set captions and the name overlay, or download it.
Give one video testimonial its own player on any web page, or send a link that opens it. The link, the embed code and the video file are in the Embed video dialog in your inbox. It works for approved videos recorded or uploaded to ReTestimonial. Everyone on the project can copy the code; everyone except Viewers can change its switches.
Open the dialog
In your project's inbox, open Approved and find the video. Click Show more at the bottom of its card, then Share and Embed video. The Share testimonial dialog opens with three tabs: Copy link, Embed video and Download video.
Embed video is greyed out while the video is still processing, and for videos added from a link to another site, such as YouTube or Loom.
Copy the link or the code
- Copy link: click Copy. The link starts with
https://embed.retestimonial.com/v/and opens the player on a page of its own. - Embed video: set the Width and Max width (by default, full width up to 640px for a landscape video, 480px for a square one and 360px for a vertical one; type a number with a unit, such as
480pxor80%, ornonefor Max width; a value the code can't use is replaced by the default). Autoplay (muted) starts the video on its own with the sound off; visitors can turn the sound on. Then pick Standard (a single<iframe>), Responsive (it keeps its shape as the page narrows) or Direct Link, and click the copy button in the corner of the code.
Paste the code where your site builder takes custom HTML, such as an HTML or code block.
Both codes give the player the video's own shape, so a vertical or square video isn't cropped. A code you copied earlier keeps its landscape frame: there the whole video still shows, with black bars at the sides, so copy the code again to get the right shape.
Set captions and the name overlay
- Auto-captions shows captions in the player. Videos recorded or uploaded on Pro, Premium and Business get an automatic English transcript a few minutes after they're ready, and the captions include any corrections you made to it (see Edit a testimonial). The badge beside the switch shows Preparing, Ready, Failed or Not Available; you can switch captions on or off only once it says Ready, and until then the switch stays off.
- Show author name shows the author's name, title and company on the video. It's on for every new video.
- Embed enabled lets the code and the link play the video (see "Turn the player off" below).
Each switch saves straight away, and players on your site show the change on their next page load. Auto-captions and Show author name also apply to the video on the testimonial's share page. None of them changes your widgets or Wall of Love.
Download the video (optional)
Open Download video. The tab checks whether an MP4 of the video exists:
- Download saves the MP4 to your computer.
- Prepare download appears when there's no MP4 yet. Click it, and Download takes its place a minute or two later; you can leave the dialog open or come back. Preparing is for the workspace owner and the project's Admins.
- If your plan doesn't include MP4 files of video testimonials, the tab says the video can't be downloaded.
An MP4 is prepared on its own when a video finishes processing, if your workspace has social video exports of video testimonials left that month (Free includes 0 a month), and when you export a social video of it. Prepare download follows the same rule, so it isn't offered when your plan has none left, or while the project is read-only.
What visitors see
- Before playing: the video's thumbnail and a play button in your accent colour. The thumbnail is the image you uploaded if there is one, otherwise the still you chose, otherwise the first frame. With Show author name on, a card shows the author's name and title.
- Autoplay isn't a play. A player set to Autoplay (muted) counts in your video analytics only once the viewer clicks, taps or uses the keyboard in it.
- While playing: play and pause, a progress bar, the time, mute and full screen. Captions are on by default, and a CC button turns them off. With the overlay on, the name and title show beside a coloured bar, fade 3 seconds into playback and come back when the video is paused.
- A trimmed video plays only the part you kept: here, on its share page, in your widgets and on your Walls of Love. To trim a video, use Trim on its card in the inbox.
- A "Powered by ReTestimonial" badge sits in the top corner, unless your plan removes branding (Pro, Premium and Business) and Show badges on share pages and video embeds is off. See Remove ReTestimonial branding.
The player's page asks search engines not to list it, and its link gets no preview image on social media. To send the video to people, its share page often works better: use Share and Get the link (see Testimonial share pages).
Turn the player off
Anyone with the code or the link can put the player on any site. To stop it everywhere, turn off Embed enabled: from their next page load, players show Testimonial Not Found. The code stays the same, so turning the switch back on brings them back. The video still plays in your widgets, on your Wall of Love and on its share page.
Rejecting, archiving, marking as spam or deleting the testimonial takes the player down too, from the next page load: it then shows Testimonial Not Found.
Colour and badge
In your project settings, the Embed tab's Accent Color colours the play button, the overlay's bar and the CC button of every video player in the project. Click Save Changes; players pick it up on their next load. Whether the author's name shows is set per video, with Show author name. See Project settings.
What happens next
Plays through the code or the link count as Standalone plays in Video Analytics; choose Embed only to leave out share page plays. Video Analytics is on Pro, Premium and Business. See Read your video analytics.
